Sunday, 4th September - Chicago

Slept through until alarm at 7.30pm and woke to a grey and cloudy Chicago morning. Decided to catch the hi-line tram (subway in the sky) to Lou Mitchell's famous "start of Route 66" restaurant on Jackson.

It started to rain (hard!) and we were all soaked by the time we got to the restaurant. No matter, great food awaited us.

After breakfast (or, more accurately, brunch) we made our way to the Willis Tower with a view to visiting the Sky Deck. Sadly, low cloud meant visibility at the top was nil so we saved $88 and put it on the list for next time.
Suse and I then walked north up Jackson to Grant Park to the traditional start of Route 66 (although the sign marking the start has "disappeared" 🙄 ) and then in to Millenium Park to see The Bean.

In the afternoon, with the weather slowly drying, Chris and Suse embarked on a 90 minute "Chicago Architectural Highlights" River cruise that commences from the quayside opposite this modest little skyscraper ......

We then walked up Michigan Ave, the "Magnificent Mile", to the John Hancock Tower and took the elevator to the 94th floor to view the wonders of Chicago from 1000ft above the city. Thankfully, the cloud base had lifted sufficiently for us to get a pretty good view of the entire city including the Navy Pier:

Dinner? We're in Chicago! What else other than a deep pan Chicago pizza? It had to be done.

Tomorrow we return to Chicago O'Hare Airport to collect our hire car (it is Labor Day in the USA so the rather more convenient downtown hire office is closed) and head west to St Louis.

  1. That's a lot of walking. You will have smaller feet by the end .
