Tuesday, 6th September - St Louis

Today our activities largely centred around the St Louis waterfront and the "Gateway Arch"

630ft wide at the base and standing 630ft tall it is an impressive sight. After a 30 minute movie presentation showing how it was built (in the 1960s) we clambered aboard a tiny tram car and trundled to the very top.

That's downtown to the west including the Old Court House and the St Louis Cardinals' baseball stadium and, to the east, the Mississippi.

After we returned to ground level we embarked on the good ship "Tom Sawyer" for an hour long trip on the Mississippi.

We would have visited the National Blues Museum late afternoon/evening but they had just reduced their opening hours and closed at 4pm. A real shame.

Dinner at the Sugarfire Smokehouse. Ribs, brisket, coleslaw and fries. Delicious 😋

    How does the little train get up to the top of the arch. I have visions of a toy car going up the side as in toytown

Our room at the Thunderbird Lodge motel, Chinle. Arizona blue sky. Today we went to the Canyon de Chelly National Park starting at the visitor centre to collect maps etc. and then spent the morning exploring the North Rim of the Canyon del Meurto (Canyon of the Dead). A Round trip of 30 miles. Stunning scenery, again the pictures don't really do it justice. The cliffs are sheer and over 1000ft tall. Lots of little critters. In the afternoon we drove the length of the south rim of the Canyon de Chelly stopping off at the various viewing points. Easy to see why the Navajo and their predecessors lived in the lush, green, fertile canyon. Sadly the Spanish found them.  To this day some still live there. Tomorrow we venture into the canyon in four-wheel drive vehicles for a four hour tour before we continue on to Holbrook.

Tuesday, 20th September - Williams/Grand Canyon

After watching a somewhat cringe-worthy mock cowboy gun fight, we boarded one of the observation cars, Grand View, on the Grand Canyon Railroad and trundled 63 miles north in a little over two hours. The sights that awaited us are quite indescribable and trying to capture the enormity of what lay before us adequately on a phone camera is impossible. The Grand Canyon is simply VAST. When we first arrived there was a fair bit of cloud cover and the colours were quite muted. As the clouds parted and the sun broke through the true beauty of the Canyon was revealed. Wednesday, 21st September - Williams, Arizona, to Las Vegas, Nevada

Today we put another 280 miles on the clock and entered the 8th state on our trip, albeit not one on Route 66, Nevada to spend a couple of nights in the crazy world that is Las Vegas. On the way we travelled on the most undisturbed and unspoilt part of Route 66 stopping in Seligman, the beating heart of Route 66's revival in the late 80s and early 90s following its official decommissioning. The late Juan, owner of the Snow Cap Cafe, and his brother Angel Delgadillo, a barber shop owner, established the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona so that the heritage of Route 66 would not be lost. Seligman is also home to the Roadrunner Cafe and the infamous Roadkill Cafe whose motto is "you kill it, we grill it". Onward to Hackberry and the delightful Hackberry Stores, home to THE best gift shop on Route 66 and some cracking examples of old cars and Americana memorabilia. ...
