Wednesday, 7th September - St Louis to Springfield, Missouri

First stop of the day at the legendary, albeit not open until later in the day, Ted Drewes Frozen Custard Store. We can dream ....

On then to the Meramec Caverns, one of the first tourist attractions on Route 66 and, supposedly, hideout of Jesse James (why let a good story get in the way of the truth?).

We navigated along, occasionally with some difficulty, some old alignments of Route 66, leaving behind Interstate 44, and took lunch at Weir's in Cuba.

A brief photo stop at the famous Munger Moss Motel in Lebanon.

Finally arriving, as the sun went down, at our overnight accommodation, an original Route 66 motel, the Best Western Rail Haven. Apparently, Elvis once stayed here.

Here are a few pics of our rental vehicle, a Nissan Armada. A comfy old barge with a 5.5 litre V8 engine under the hood. Economical it is not!

  1. The caves look outstanding. Hope that petrol is still much cheaper over there!
